Tarzan was taken aback by the sight of the terrible winged lizard .....

A new piece for the upcoming "Golden Age of Comics and Animation" show at Brave New Worlds Comics first Friday July 3rd. Really had no idea what I wanted to do for this, I was seeing a lot of Popeye , Betty Boop at first I was thinking Batman, Captain America, or Robin, but I knew there would be a few of those also, and a lot of that sorta thing coming in so I didnt know where I was gonna fit in for this show so I went to the library and looked through some history of comics books, and there it was classics like Tarzan, and Prince Valient. I knew it had to be Tarzan. This went through a few stages of drawings, and gave me a hard time from the start. Originally he was going to be either fighting some sort of ape or sabre toothed cat. I collected about 75 pieces of reference for this, and had a crash course in Pterosaur anatomy, I used pictures of my self for the Tarzan pose, (with a lot of added muscle) i included a few in this post, i channeled the ghosts of James Allen St John, and NC Wyeth 2 Tarzan pros, and thumbed through many a Frank Frazetta book. and everything started falling together, I had the idea of a Lion Helm for a while but never had anything to incorporate it into before, also because I didnt know which direction to go Tarzan's hair, also to show he had been victorious in previous battles with beasts before. I wanted to try a different lighting situation also where the light would be coming from a golden sky behind. This will be the last Autumn Society Show for I while so Ill be busy doing some more personal works for a show in September.

After a night of heavy drinking with Jeff and Sam of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society I was officially made a member. I have never drawn a cartoon but apparently that doesn't matter. Hopefully I can get in some shows with these guys cause they are all super talented. New art up on here next week.

80's Show Shoutro

Some pictures stolen from Eric Braddock ericbraddock.com from the opening of the 80's show at Brave New World. Nice turnout even with the rainy weather, a lot of pieces were sold, two Spanish Ghostbusters showd up. You can see me in the picture of the crowd with the shitty blue nike bookbag from 5 years engaged in critique with Alex Echman Lawn. Some guys pointing at my piece i think, probobly wondering what the hell it is. Thanks to Churchman (who never comes to anything) for showing up, the Pardell brothers and Charlotte, and Joe Game for keeping me busy with this Society thing.

"It will be dark soon and they mostly come at night.....mostly."

Here's my contribution to the pop 80's Autumn Society Group Show @ Brave New Worlds Comics this month (see last post) for date address and times. Alien Derelict Spacecraft found on LV-426 (Aliens) 1986. Just to clarify the "Derelict" ship from Alien made two appearances 1st in Alien 79' and rediscovered again in Aliens 86' this is how it appeared in 86'. Note the port (or hammerhead side) side has collapsed years after it was first seen, possibly due to the "primitive" and unstable enviroment on LV-426. 3 movies have had a profound impact on my life. Jaw's, Terminator 2 and Aliens (T2 and Aliens both James Cameron) Make that 4 got to leave room for Star Wars . Along with comic books, all had a hand in sparking my imagination as a youngin. I remember watching Aliens on TNT just about weekend when I was about 6 or 7 and to this day Ill curl up with a bottle of whiskey and the Aliens DVD about once a month, not a bad scene in the whole film, a perfect movie in my opinion. I don't really know why I choose to paint this particular ship, with such a visual feast from the movie to choose from. Maybe because its so mysterious, it symbolizes the beginning and an end, Its mechanical and organic. Anyways I hope you enjoy.

New Show "Heart Earth"

Bristlecone Pines (Heart Earth Show)

Me and my friend Ryan rolled up to a patch of gnarly branched, twisted, not to tall trees growing amongst some rocks on the mountain. We stood around snapped some pics, smoked ciggarette's, drank a beer and moved on. He told me they were endangered in some way but didn't know why. I did some research years later and found out their signifacance. The Bristlecone Pine is one of the oldest living organism on earth, up to 5,000 years. Some were saplings while the pyramids were being constructed. They grow very slowly due the conditions they live below the tree line in cold and dry climates. They have thrived in places where no other tree would and free of compitition, each year growing 1/1000th of an inch. I thought this would be perfect for the Heart Earth show coming up w/ the autumn society brethren.

TRY. FAIL. TRY Figure Painting II

Figure painting is so annoying, hard, and frustrating. These last two I would consider failures. Likenesses are off, I got seriously pissed during both of them, and gave up most of the way through. I guess its just something you gotta keep working at. Started one more today should be up in two weeks.

Gobblers

I always look at birds and picture dinosaurs moving around the same way, especially when looking at turkeys. The way they are low to ground moving slowly and cautiously head jutting this way and that, its like looking into the past. During the fall I wanted to do a turkey piece with a prehistoric feeling to it. Especially with all the hype about feathered dinosaurs, and being close to Thanksgiving I went ahead. A month later National Geographic put out a small article about Turkeys being descendants of Raptors, and I thought what the fuck I'm no scientist but that's pretty cool. Anyways I hope that feeling comes across. I wanted to mess around with light a little bit with the figure in the foreground in shadow and the others lit, to give a feeling of the one up front sorta threatening the others. Red Rock Monoliths

Millions of years ago these sandstone rocks were pushed upwards from the bottom of the vast Interior Sea which covered much of the western United States. On a trip out west I had the chance to spend the day photographing, climbing and hiking around them. I wish I could have seen what they have. Acrylic on masonite panel. 9.5" X 12.5" for sale.
